The Koning Willem Alexander bridge subtly meets the need to also enable larger and taller boats access to Breda’s canals to allow for a better water sports experience. The slenderness of the construction ensures that the threshold put up across the River Mark is not too large and that the Tramsingel naturally connects to the Academiesingel. The railing evokes a sparkling image and adds extra lustre to the movement across the bridge. Underneath the bridge, Yvonne Né has created of a line of poetry set in concrete, in which she expresses the significance of the bridge in its surroundings: ‘Ineens is er dit brede contact met dingen waarvan wij niet wisten dat ze zo koninklijk zijn en altijd al in en buiten ons hebben bestaan.’ [ ‘All of a sudden, there is this broad contact with things we did not know to be so royal, and which have always existed inside and outside us.’]
